I've learned something about my writing process today. (I'm about to geek out on you with an engineering analogy...please bear with me)

There are times when getting started is the most difficult part of the writing process for me. This is very similar to a phenomena that I learned about in Physics 101. It's called static friction. It corresponds to the amount of force you must apply to a stationary object to put it in motion. Once it's in motion, there is a "resistance" to the movement called kinetic friction. Static friction is the larger of the two forces resisting the forward movement. This proves that getting started is always the most difficult step.

For writers, it could be called having to overcome static fiction. We've all experienced this. On some days, we must apply greater amounts of motivation (or consume a lot more caffeine) before writing can commence.

The point is, once you've started it's a lot easier to maintain your momentum. Many times, I hear writer's say, "I just don't know where to start." Honestly, it doesn't matter. Just start writing anything, who knows what kind of story will emerge.

So what do you do to overcome your static fiction?

  1. Never heard so much physics being applied to writing before. Interesting.

I totally agree with your analogy. Just sit down and do it, if you’re a writer it will come.
At least for me, it does.
It seems the closer I get to finish a draft, the harder it is to sit down and write. There is no good reason. Maybe its self-doubt or fear that once you have a completed MS, you have to try and get it published… and maybe find out you just wasted a year of your life writing crap.
I wish all writers the confidence to; dream, write, overcome, never lose hope and to be successful.
I love the blog, I will be back.
    Thx

  3. Thanks fellow bloggin peeps! Physics is something I live and breathe. So often times it pops up in my thought process and how I relate to things. After years of being an engineer, I've discovered so many of the laws of physics relate to other things in life that are intangible.

Thanks again for stopping by my blog and leaving comments! It's always greatly appreciated :)

A physics analogy related to writing. I love it! I experience static fiction myself. Once I can get started, it is ten times easier to keep going, but getting over the hump is the hardest. I have a similar issue to the one stated by another commenter - the closer I get to finishing, the harder it is!

I really don't have any magic trick to get past the static fiction. I pretty much glue my butt to the chair and tell myself to stop whining and get on with it. It is painful, but worthwhile.

Great post. I was just thinking the other day about how difficult it sometimes is to just sit and start writing.

Of course, once you get on a roll, it can be equally difficult stopping. I've sat down at midnight intending to write for an hour or two, and have had to force myself to quit at 5:30 AM so I can get some sleep before work!
